Cal State LA Athletics

2023: Had another sensational season for the Golden Eagles in his final year with the program. Earned first-team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches and first-team All-West Region honors from the United Soccer Coaches and D2 Conference Commissioners Association. Earned first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors for a second straight season and was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player at the CCAA Tournament. Appeared in 20 games and started 17. Played a total of 1,112 minutes. Led the team in scoring for a second straight year with 10 goals and four assists for 24 points. Started the season well with a goal in a season-opening 1-0 win over Regis on Aug. 31. Had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Azusa Pacific on Sept. 12. Added single goals in a 3-1 win over Point Loma on Sept. 16, and a 5-0 win over San Francisco State on Sept. 29 and had a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 15. Had two goals in a 3-2 win over Stanislaus State on Oct. 22, including the game-winner to break a 2-2 tie in the 59^th minute. Had goals in a 3-0 win at Sonoma State on Oct. 27 and a 2-0 win at Cal Poly Humboldt on Oct. 29. Scored the game-winner in a 2-0 CCAA Tournament win over Cal State San Marcos on Nov. 10. Had a season-high two assists in a 3-0 win at Biola on Sept. 9. For his career, appeared in 40 games and started 30. Played a total of 1,931 minutes. Had 16 goals and nine assists for 41 points.

2022: Had a tremendous season for the Golden Eagles in his first year with the program. Earned third-team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches. Earned first-team All-West Region honors from the United Soccer Coaches and the D2 Conference Commissioners Association. Earned first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors. Appeared in all 20 games with 13 starts. Played a total of 819 minutes. Led the team with six goals and five assists for 17 points. Shared the team lead in goals and assists. Made his Cal State LA debut and scored a goal in a 6-0 win over Saint Martin’s on Aug. 25. Scored a penalty kick goal in a 4-3 win over Biola on Sept. 7. Made his first career start for Cal State LA and had the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win at Azusa Pacific on Sept. 10. Scored the game-tying goal in the 66^th minute of a 2-2 tie against Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 9. Scored the opening goal on a penalty kick in the 51^st minute of a 3-0 win over Sonoma State on Oct. 14. Scored the team’s third goal in the 57^th minute of a 4-0 win at Stanislaus State on Oct. 21. Had an assist on a goal by Alex Rodriguez in the 51^st minute of a 1-1 tie at Chico State on Oct. 2. Had an assist in Cal State LA’s 2-1 win over Sonoma State in a CCAA Tournament semifinal contest. Played a season-high 62 minutes against Northwest Nazarene in NCAA playoff game on Nov. 12.

At Cerritos College: Earned first-team all-conference and All-American honors as a sophomore and second-team all-conference honors as a freshman. Was a team Most Valuable Player. Had 21 goals and 10 assists in 45 career games for the Falcons.

At Caesar Chavez High School: Earned “Dream Team” Player of the Year as a junior and was team Most Valuable Player as a freshman and sophomore. Was a two-time All-American.

Personal: Son of Jose and Bertha Ortega. Majoring in sociology. Enjoys playing basketball, family time and watching movies. Lists scoring the winning goal in his junior year to pass to the Final Four as his most exciting experience in sports.
