2009: Competed for Cal State L.A.'s track and field team and earned points for the Golden Eagles at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. Finished seventh in the conference in the decathlon with 5,285 points. Had best marks of 11.90 in the 100 meters, 53.26 in the 400, 5:00.91 in the 1,500, 18.54 in the 110 high hurdles, 5-7.75 in the high jump, 10-7.50 in the high jump, 19-2 in the long jump, 32-8.25 in the shot put, 89-8 in the discus and 142-7 in the javelin.

2008: Was on the roster, but did not compete in any games for the Golden Eagles in his final year with the program. For his career, appeared in 39 games and started all of them. Played a total of 3,268 minutes. Had four assists for four points.

2007: Was one of the team’s top defenders despite battling injuries throughout the season. After missing the first four contests because of injury, started the Golden Eagles’ final 17 games. Helped a defense that allowed only 22 goals all season and recorded seven shutouts. Team allowed one or fewer goals in 11 of the 17 matches he played in. Played a total of 1,419 minutes. Picked up assists on a goal in a 4-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 14 and on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over San Francisco State on Oct. 26.

2006: Made an impressive debut for the Golden Eagles as a freshman. Appeared in 22 games and started all 22. Played a total of 1,849 minutes. Helped solidify a defense that allowed only 36 goals in 23 games. Also picked up an assist on a goal against Seattle University in the NCAA Division II Far West Regional championship game. That goal sent the game into overtime.

At Carlsbad High School: Competed in soccer, football and wrestling for the Lancers.

Personal: Son of Tim and Emy Matthews. Majoring in communications. Enjoys sitting. Lists hitting a home run in t-ball at the age of 9 as his most exciting experience in sports. Also says he loves his family.
