Golden Eagles Get Started On The Right Foot

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's baseball team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association season off to a strong start Friday in the opener of a four-game series at Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles erupted for five runs in the third inning and held off a late push by the Pioneers to post a 6-4 win at Pioneer Field. Cal State LA (4-2, 1-0 CCAA) won its fourth straight game.

Jorge Garcia slugged a three-run home run as part of the five-run fifth inning and Joey Deceglie pitched six shutout innings to pace the Golden Eagles. After Deceglie gave up a grand slam home run in the seventh to make it 6-4, George Alamillo allowed only one hit over 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Sean Watkins pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save of the season.

Watkins also went 2-for-5 at the plate and scored a pair of runs. Andre Gregory, Anthony Ayala and Eli Orona also had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, who outhit the Pioneers, 10-4.

Deceglie went 6 1/3 innings and gave up three hits and three earned runs. He walked three and struck out eight before exiting after Adam Hollar connected for a grand slam to account for all four of Cal State East Bay's runs.

Cal State LA took control of the game in the third. Orona reached on an infield single and took third on a double by Gregory. Ayala and Watkins followed with run-scoring singles to make it 2-0 and Garcia followed with a three-run home run to right-center to give Cal State LA a 5-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Watkins singled, took second on a groundout by Garcia and scored on a throwing error.
