Golden Eagles Find Double Trouble At East Bay

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's baseball team found double trouble Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles dropped both ends of the doubleheader, falling 4-3 in the opener and 8-3 in the seven-inning nightcap. Cal State LA (4-4, 1-2 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Cal State LA managed only two hits in the opener, but drew seven walks and had two batters hit. Sean Watkins was 1-for-3 with one run batted in and Edgar Vela had the other hit while going 1-for-1 with three walks.

Angel Lerma gave up nine hits and three runs over 6 2/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. Nate Adams gave up one run over 1 2/3 innings.

The Golden Eagles erased an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in the third. Andre Gregory was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Randy Buenrostro and Watkins drove in Eli Orona with a sacrifice fly. After the Pioneers scored twice to take a 3-2 lead, the Golden Eagles tied it when Anthony Ayala scored on a double play grounder by Jorge Garcia in the top of the eighth.

Cal State East Bay's Kyosuke Ushimaru hit what turned out to a game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Cal State LA collected eight hits in the nightcap, but committed four errors and fell behind early.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring single by Nic Bereaud, but three errors in the bottom of the inning contributed to two runs for Cal State East Bay. Cal State LA tied it in the second on a home run by Gregory, but the Pioneers scored six runs over their next four at bats to take the lead for good.

James Mendez got the start and allowed seven hits and four earned runs over four innings. Austin Nazabal allowed a pair of unearned runs in the fifth while striking out three and Kristopher Keach struck out two in a scoreless sixth inning.

Gregory was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Ayala was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Bereaud and Garcia each had one hit and one RBI.

Cal State LA will conclude the series at Cal State East Bay with a single game on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
