LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's baseball team had a long day at Reeder Field on Saturday, but the Golden Eagles made sure it was a winning day as well.
The Golden Eagles pounded out 29 hits and swept both ends of a doubleheader against San Francisco State, 10-6 and 10-4, in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State LA (20-13, 13-10 CCAA) overcame early deficits in each game and got solid pitching to outlast San Francisco State (9-25, 5-18 CCAA).
Christian Broussard, Jr. had another big game in the opener, slugging a two-run home run in the first inning and pitching seven strong innings to collect his sixth win of the season. He wound up 2-for-3 with four runs batted in. On the mound, he scattered 10 hits and allowed four earned runs in seven innings.
In the nightcap,
James Mendez allowed only two hits and one run over the final six innings. He settled in nicely after giving up a run in the fourth inning and didn't allow a hit over five scoreless innings to end it.
Angel Sanchez had a three-run double to break a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning. He was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Broussard led a 15-hit Cal State LA attack in the opener.
Garrett Dean was 3-for-4 with two RBI,
Mike Alexander was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Sanchez and
Nathan Navarrete each had two hits and two runs scored.
Jorge Garcia also drove in a pair of runs.
Jacob Lopez was 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Gators, while Jordan Abernathy hit a solo home run.
Cal State LA trailed 5-2, but tied the game with three runs in the fifth and took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth. Broussard and Garcia singled in runs in the fifth and Dean's fielder's choice tied the game. In the sixth,
Isaac Dominguez singled in the go-ahead run with the bases loaded. Broussard followed with a sacrifice fly, Garcia reached on a fielder's choice to drive in another run and Dean doubled to right-center to make it 9-5.
George Alamillo pitched a scoreless eighth inning and
Gabriel Gentner had a 1-2-3 ninth inning with one strikeout.
In the nightcap,
Tommy Pincin was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Navarrete was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and
Sean Watkins was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
The Gators got a two-out double from Lopez, a run-scoring single by Chris Nicholson and a two-run home run by Jordan Abernathy to take a 3-1 lead in the third. Watkins drilled a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
San Francisco State took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Nicholson, only to see the Golden Eagles tie it in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Sanchez.
Cal State LA took the lead for good with a four-run rally in the sixth. Sanchez had a bases-clearing double to give the Golden Eagles a 7-4 advantage and he scored on a double by Broussard.
Cal State LA completed the scoring in the seventh thanks to a two-run triple by Navarrete.
Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series against San Francisco State with a single game on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
