Golden Eagles Come Up Short In Sunday Series Finale

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's baseball team was unable to complete a three-game series sweep against San Francisco State on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles surrendered three home runs to the Gators and were blanked over the final six innings of a 6-4 loss in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (20-14, 13-11 CCAA) scored 10 runs in both ends of a Saturday doubleheader, but managed only one run after taking a 3-0 lead in the first.

San Francisco State (10-25, 7-18 CCAA) hit three home runs, including a pair by Jack Harris. Harris and Jacob Lopez hit home runs to account for three runs in the third inning and Harris hit his second home of the game in the ninth inning.

Greg Humbert kept the Golden Eagles in the game and allowed four runs over 4 2/3 innings. Justin Davis allowed only one earned run over the next 3 2/3 innings, but took the loss as the Cal State LA offense struggled to cash in on its opportunities. Daniel Ferrell got an inning-ending double play in the ninth inning from the only batter he faced.

Christian Broussard, Jr. went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Andrew Hermanson had a two-run single as part of a 10-hit Cal State LA attack. The Golden Eagles, though, stranded eight runners on base and were unable to score after loading the bases with no one out in the fourth.

Cal State LA took advantage of a pair of San Francisco State errors to take a 3-0 lead in the first. Jorge Garcia drove in one run with a groundout and Hermanson singled in a pair of runs to give the Golden Eagles a quick 3-0 lead.

After Bryce Brooks bunted for a single leading off the third, Harris followed with his first home run of the season and Lopez hit a solo home run with one out to tie it.

Cal State LA regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Broussard doubled, took third on a single by Sean Watkins and scored on a double play groundout by Garcia.

San Francisco State got single runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth to overtake the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a doubleheader at Chico State.
