CHICO -- Cal State LA's baseball team endured a rough day on Friday against No. 5 Chico State.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in both games and were swept in a doubleheader by the Wildcats, 11-8 and 7-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association competition at Nettleton Stadium. Cal State LA (20-16, 13-13 CCAA) collected 13 hits in the opener, including a three-run home run by
Jorge Garcia in the ninth inning. The Golden Eagles, though, managed only six hits in the nightcap and were blanked until the eighth inning.
Chico State (30-7, 23-3), which has been dominant so far in conference play this season, continued its strong play at home and further strengthened its hold on the CCAA North Division.
Garcia was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI in the opener, while
Nathan Navarrete was 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Garrett Dean had a pinch-hit two-run double for Cal State LA.
Christian Broussard, Jr. got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed seven hits and seven runs in 3 1/3 innings. Daniel Farrell allowed five hits and two runs over the next 2 2/3 innings and
Ryan Dixon allowed just one earned run over the final two innings.
Cal State LA took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when an error allowed Navarrete to score and
Sean Watkins had a run-scoring single to drive in Broussard later in the inning. Chico State, though, responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and took a 7-2 lead after three innings.
Cal State LA scored three times in the top of the sixth to make it a 7-5 game. Dean had his two-run double and later scored on a single by Navarrete. Chico State, though, got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth and added two more in the seventh to take an 11-5 lead.
Garcia slugged his three-run home run in the top of the ninth to conclude the scoring.
In the nightcap, Chico State's Hunter Haworth blanked the Golden Eagles on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He was backed by a Chico State offense that scored twice in the first, once in the second, twice in the third, once in the fourth and once in the sixth to open up a 7-0 lead. Cal State LA got its only run in the eighth inning thanks to a Broussard groundout that drove in
Drew Seelman.
Justin Davis went five innings and allowed 10 hits and six runs.
Holden Berger allowed one run over 2/3 of an inning,
James Mendez blanked the Wildcats over 1 1/3 innings and
Austin Nazabal pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will complete the series at Chico State with a single game beginning at 11 a.m.
