Golden Eagles Swept In Saturday Doubleheader

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's baseball team endured a double dose of frustrating results Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Cal State East Bay.

The Golden Eagles managed only two hits in a 14-0 loss in the opener and were unable to hold a 4-2 lead in a 6-4 defeat in the nightcap at Pioneer Field. Cal State LA (7-25, 6-15 CCAA) committed three errors in each game, including two that contributed to three runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap.

Dakota Hernandez and Garrett Dean had the only hits for the Golden Eagles in the opener, while Hernandez and Ryan Welker had three hits each in the second game. Cal State LA had 11 hits in the nightcap.

Alex Vesia tossed seven scoreless innings in the opener for Cal State East Bay (20-13, 11-11 CCAA). Marcus Wise was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Michael Thomas was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Daniel Diaz went 6 1/3 innings for the Golden Eagles in the opener. Cal State East Bay led 5-0 through six innings and then put the game out of reach with eight runs in the seventh.

Mitchell Moore pitched well enough to win in the nightcap, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. James Mendez didn't allow a hit and just an unearned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Troy Resch scored two runs for Cal State East Bay, while Thomas had two more RBI and Wise added two more hits. Andrew Fernandez pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win, while Derek Oetken worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his seventh save.

Cal State LA scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit. Welker hit a two-run double to tie the game, Hernandez drove in the go-ahead run with a single and Christian Broussard, Jr. added a run-scoring double to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead.

Cal State East Bay closed to within 4-3 with one run in the sixth and then took advantage of two Golden Eagle errors to score three times in the seventh.

The Golden Eagles threatened in the ninth inning with a pair of one-out singles from Welker and Nathan Navarrete, but Oetken got a double play grounder to end it.

Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series at Cal State East Bay with a single game beginning at 11 a.m.
