Golden Eagles Post Sweep Over CS Monterey Bay

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team has endured more than its fair share of one-run defeats this season, but things turned around in a big way Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader.

The Golden Eagles got a game-winning two-run single from Garrett Dean in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 4-3 win in the opener and then a go-ahead eighth-inning single from Nathan Navarrete for a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Cal State LA (9-25, 8-15 CCAA) was just 3-11 in one-run games this season before Saturday's dramatic sweep.

Cal State LA got two outstanding starts on Saturday. Daniel Diaz worked 7 2/3 strong innings in the opener, allowing only two runs, while Mitchell Moore gave up just four hits and three runs in six innings in the nightcap. Justin Davis got the win in the opener after allowing only one hit and one run in 1 1/3 innings and James Mendez picked up the win in the nightcap after allowing one run over two innings. Gabriel Gentner provided some drama in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out before buckling down and getting the final two outs for his third save.

The Golden Eagles also played some strong defense during the doubleheader, including a leaping grab of a deep drive to left by Ryan Dixon.

Both teams had 10 hits in the opener. Garret Brown and Ruben Gonzalez had two hits each for the Otters (25-11, 14-10 CCAA), while Dakota Hernandez was 3-for-4 and Ryan Welker was 2-for-5.

The opener featured a good pitchers' battle between Diaz and Cal State Monterey Bay's Gabe Katich, who went seven innings and gave up seven hits and two runs.

Cal State Monterey Bay took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Gonzalez singled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, but Cal State LA tied it in the bottom of the inning when Hernandez tripled and scored on a single by Christian Broussard, Jr. The Golden Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the seventh when Hernandez singled to drive in Isaac Dominguez, but Cal State Monterey Bay tied it in the eighth when Justin Flores singled in Brian Bostjancic.

The Otters went ahead in the ninth when Brown doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

Cal State LA then got its game-winning rally in the ninth. Welker beat out an infield single with one out and Hernandez was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Paul Martinez walked to load the bases and Dean, brought into the game as a pinch hitter, lined a single to left-center on a 2-2 pitch to win the game.

In the nightcap, Cal State LA scored four times in the third to erase a 2-0 deficit. The big hit was a three-run double by Broussard.

The Otters scored once in the sixth to pull to within 4-3 and then tied it on a solo home run by Jeffery Amaral leading off the seventh.

Pinch hitter Armett Johnson doubled to lead off the eighth inning and Navarrete punched a single down the left-field line with two outs to put the Golden Eagles ahead.

Gentner got the first out in the ninth, but then a walk, ground single and another walk loaded the bases with one out. Gentner, though, got the second out on a pop-up and the final out on a shallow fly ball to end it.

Cal State LA will conclude the series with a single game against Cal State Monterey Bay at noon.
