Golden Eagles Unable To Complete Series Sweep

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw its hopes for its first series sweep of the season dashed by a hot-hitting Cal State Monterey Bay team Sunday at Reeder Field.

The Golden Eagles (9-26, 8-16 CCAA) had won a pair of one-run decisions on a dramatic Saturday, but they were outscored 8-0 over the final two innings of an 18-9 loss to the Otters (26-11, 15-10 CCAA) on Sunday. Cal State LA held an 8-6 lead after four innings, but Cal State Monterey Bay scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth to take the lead. The Otters then put the game away with five runs in the eighth and three in the ninth.

Christian Broussard, Jr., who also pitched for the Golden Eagles, went 3-for-4 with four RBI and his second home run of the season. Dakota Hernandez was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and Ryan Dixon was 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Broussard started on the mound and allowed three earned runs over four innings and left with an 8-6 lead. Ralph Ramirez allowed one run in his one inning of work before departing and seven Cal State LA pitchers saw time on the mound over the final four innings. Holden Berger retired the only batter he faced leading off the ninth and Merrick Patito retired the only two batters he faced.

Cal State Monterey Bay had 18 hits, including home runs from Kevin Davidson and Hayden Duer. They were a combined 5-for-11 with three runs scored and six RBI. Josh Heinz was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Matt Urakami was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBI.

Broussard hit a towering two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to erase a 2-0 deficit, but Cal State Monterey Bay got a three-run home run from Duer in the third to take a 5-2 lead. Cal State LA got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Dixon before the Otters got another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Urakami to make it 6-3.

Cal State LA then got five runs in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. Isaac Dominguez drove in a run with a groundout, Ryan Welker drove in a run with an infield hit, Hernandez tied it with a double and Broussard singled in two to give Cal State LA the lead.

Davidson homered to lead off the fifth and make it 8-7 and the Otters scored three times in the sixth to take the lead for good. Hernandez singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-8, but the Otters scored eight runs over the final two innings to put the game out of reach.

Cal State LA will open a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
