Golden Eagles Record 8-1 Win Over Saint Martin's

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s nationally-ranked men's soccer team got its offense rolling on a hot Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles used first-half goals from Halil Tozar and Jordan Payne to break a 1-1 tie and exploded for five second-half scores in an 8-1 victory over Saint Martin's at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-0) posted its second straight win over a team from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Tozar and Payne scored back-to-back less than one minute apart and each assisted on the other's goal, just like they did in a win Thursday over Western Washington. Tozar had two goals and three assists on Saturday, while Payne had two goals and one assist.

Herbert Biste, Tobias Tobrant, Andre Bissmark and Sigifredo Torres also had goals for the Golden Eagles, who start the season ranked 14th in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Saint Martin's (0-2), which was coming off a tough 2-1 loss at UC San Diego on Thursday, got a first-half goal from Jake Zimmer that tied the game in the 22nd minute.

Cal State L.A. had a 24-5 edge in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Mike Beigarten had a pair of saves for the Golden Eagles, while Saint Martin's J.J. Olson made seven saves.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute when Biste scored his first goal of the season. Bissmark started the scoring play and Joshua Cortez sent a perfect pass to Biste, who broke free and knocked a shot just inside the far post.

Saint Martin's tied the game five minutes later shortly after a corner kick. Kaleb Strawn stole an errant clearing attempt and set up Zimmer, who scored from close-range.

Tozar, though, put the Golden Eagles ahead less than two minutes later when he received a beautiful centering pass from Payne and finished it into the net. Then, just 28 seconds later, Olson made a great save on a hard shot from Tozar, but Payne was there to knock in the rebound to make it 3-1.

The score remained that way until the Golden Eagles scored five goals in 23 minutes of the second half. Tozar started the scoring binge with his second goal of the game and third of the season. Tobrant had the assist and Tozar lofted a long shot inside the far post in the 66th minute.

Tobrant scored less than five minutes later to make it 5-1 with assists from Tozar and Bissmark.

Bissmark made it 6-1 with an assist from Tozar in the 75th minute, Payne made it 7-1 with his second goal of the game from Tobrant in the 78th minute and Torres completed the scoring with assists from Sammy Gonzalez and Christopher Gardea in the 89th minute.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Point Loma Nazarene beginning at 4 p.m.
