Golden Eagles Get Swept In DH In San Francisco

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was unable to earn a victory on Saturday and dropped both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles rallied to send the game into extra innings in the opener only to fall, 4-3, in 11 innings and then couldn't hold down San Francisco State in an 11-6 defeat in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (14-22, 12-18 CCAA) has now lost seven straight games, while San Francisco State (16-21, 11-16 CCAA) has won four of its last five games.

Greg Humbert pitched eight strong innings in the opener and allowed 10 hits and three runs. The Golden Eagles, trailing 3-0 after seven innings, sent the game into extra innings by scoring once in the eighth inning and twice in the ninth. A two-out single by Manny Acosta tied the game in the ninth. Reed Reznicek blanked the Gators in the ninth and 10th innings, but the Gators got a two-out, bases-loaded single from Matt Vera in the 11th inning to win the game.

In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles rallied to tie the game twice, once at 2-2 and again at 6-6, but the Gators scored two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to earn the sweep. Jordan Cavazos allowed six hits and three earned runs over 3 2/3 innings. Cal State L.A. committed four errors that led to eight unearned runs.

The Golden Eagles struggled offensively through the first seven innings of the opener before getting on the board in the eighth. Casey Ryan singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Drew Vanisi.

Cal State L.A. then tied it in the ninth. David Trejo and Matt Sanchez led off with singles and Josh Guerra executed a sacrifice bunt. Jesus Cuevas drove in the first run with a run-scoring groundout to make it 3-2 and Acosta's clutch two-out single tied it at 3-3.

Humbert allowed two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth and then worked three scoreless innings before leaving after the eighth inning. He walked two and struck out six.

Acosta was 2-for-5 with one RBI, Ryan was 2-for-5 with one run scored and David Trejo was 2-for-4 in the opener.

In the nightcap, Cal State L.A. took a quick 1-0 lead in the first. Kyle Peralta had a run-scoring single after Ryan and Vanisi reached on infield singles.

The Gators scored twice in the second to take a 2-1 lead, but the Golden Eagles got a solo home run from Cody Doyle in the top of the third inning to tie it.

San Francisco State, though, scored four times in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead.

Cal State L.A. evened things up for a second time with four runs in the fourth. Sanchez singled and Guerra walked to start the rally. Acosta drove in one run with a single and Guerra scored on a throwing error to make it 6-4. Ryan had a run-scoring single later in the inning to make it 6-5 and a run-scoring single by Vanisi tied it.

San Francisco State, though, got a go-ahead two-run single by Grady Espinoza in the bottom of the fourth and then extended its lead with a three-run double by Carter Loud.

Travis Hawley pitched a scoreless inning for Cal State L.A. Vanisi was 3-for-3, Ryan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI and Doyle was 2-for-4 with a home run.

The Golden Eagles will conclude the four-game series with a single game at San Francisco State on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
