Golden Eagles Get A PItching Gem From Santhon

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s Ryan Santhon turned back the clock Thursday night while leading the Golden Eagles to a big 7-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal Poly Pomona.

Santhon, who missed all of the 2013 season with injury, tossed a dominating three-hit, complete-game shutout, while blanking the Broncos at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (10-8, 8-4 CCAA) won its fifth straight game and pulled into a tie for second place in the CCAA with Cal Poly Pomona (14-4, 8-4 CCAA).

Santhon displayed the vintage form he had in 2012 when he was one of the top pitchers in the CCAA. He allowed only two doubles, a single and a ninth-inning walk and was backed by a nine-hit Cal State L.A. offensive attack. Casey Ryan was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Cody Doyle was 2-for-2 with three RBI.

Santhon allowed a two-out single in the first to Chris Carlson and a leadoff double to Bo Walter in the second. He then retired 23 straight Cal Poly Pomona hitters until a two-out double in the ninth by David Armendariz.

Cal State L.A. took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Matt Sanchez singled and Ryan followed with a bunt single. Manny Acosta loaded the bases with a single and Doyle was hit by a pitch to drive in Sanchez with the first run of the game. Jesus Cuevas then reached on an error as Ryan scored to make it 2-0.

Doyle delivered a two-run double in the fifth inning to make it 4-0 and the Golden Eagles scored two more times in the seventh to make it 6-0. Ryan singled, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third when Acosta fouled out to right. Doyle was walked intentionally and Kyle Peralta drew a walk to load the bases. Two runs scored when Cuevas reached on an error.

Cal State L.A. scored its final run in the eighth when Trent Zaks reached on an error and Steven Luna contributed a pinch-hit single.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 6 p.m.
