Golden Eagles Settle For Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, but had to settle for a split of a non-conference doubleheader with California Collegiate Athletic Association foe UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles got outstanding pitching from Brandon Quintero, Greg Humbert and Marcos Casillas to beat the Tritons, 2-0, in the opener, but UC San Diego rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win the nightcap, 9-3, Saturday at Triton Ballpark.

Cal State L.A. (1-4) was blanked over the final eight innings of the nightcap.

Quintero was outstanding in the opener, allowing only an infield single in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He walked four and also struck out four. Greg Humbert blanked the Tritons over the next 2 2/3 innings, also only permitting an infield single. He walked one and struck out four. Casillas worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning with one strikeout to earn the save.

The Golden Eagles scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. Trent Zaks got the rally started in the second inning with a leadoff single. Steve Luna reached on an error and Manny Acosta sacrificed both runners over. After Kyle Peralta walked, Rodrigo Martinez singled to drive in Zaks with the first run of the game.

Cal State L.A. extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Casey Ryan reached on a bunt single, took third on a single by Andrew Montanari and scored on Cody Doyle's double-play grounder.

Quintero didn't allow a hit until UC San Diego's Justin Rahn reached on an infield single in the fourth. The Tritons' second hit was also an infield single in the eighth inning.

The Golden Eagles struck quickly in the nightcap, scoring three times in the top of the first, but UC San Diego scored in seven of its eight at bats to earn the split.

Montanari singled, Doyle walked and Josh Guerra reached on an error that allowed Montanari to score. Peralta then delivered a two-out, two-run double to make it 3-0. UC San Diego, though, struck for two runs in the bottom of the inning, tied it with a run in the third and took the lead for good with a run in the fourth.

Ryan Keller got the start for the Golden Eagles and gave up four hits and only one earned run in 3 2/3 innings while walking five and striking out four.

Cal State L.A. will conclude the three-game, non-conference series with UC San Diego with a single game at Reeder Field beginning at 2 p.m.
