Golden Eagles Earn Series Split With Monterey Bay

Box Score SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team made sure it earned a California Collegiate Athletic Association series split at Cal State Monterey Bay with a big win on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles collected 18 hits and got a strong starting pitching performance from Ryan Santhon to beat the Otters, 12-2, in the series finale on Sunday. Cal State L.A. (6-8, 4-4 CCAA) scored at least two runs in five innings on Sunday to back the pitching of Santhon and Greg Humbert, who combined to limit the Otters (4-10, 2-6 CCAA) to just five hits.

Kyle Peralta drove in five runs to lead the offensive outburst, while Manny Acosta was 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Cody Doyle was 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBI and Niko Garcia and Josh Guerra each drove in two runs and had two hits.

Santhon, in his best start of the season, gave up just four hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings. He left after retiring the first two batters in the sixth. Humbert came on and blanked the Otters on just one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings to pick up his first save. Santhon improved to 1-1 on the season.

The series between the 2014 CCAA Tournament champions (Cal State L.A.) and 2014 CCAA regular-season champions (Cal State Monterey Bay) featured plenty of offense and Sunday's game was more of the same, especially for the Golden Eagles. All nine starters picked up hits for Cal State L.A. in the win.

The Golden Eagles struck immediately, scoring two runs in the first inning when Peralta drove in Casey Ryan and Acosta with a single. Santhon gave up a triple to Brian Hamm and a single to Michael Lonsdale to open the first, but got out of further damage due largely to a strikeout of Mark Hurley and a strong throw from Doyle to catch Lonsdale trying to steal second.

Cal State L.A. stretched its lead to 5-1 in the third. Peralta delivered his second two-run single of the game and Garcia singled in a run.

After the Otters scored a run to make it 5-2, the Golden Eagles got a bases-loaded walk to Peralta in the fourth to make it 6-2. Guerra had a two-run single to drive in Trent Zaks and Jesus Cuevas in the fifth to make it 8-2. A run-scoring double by Doyle and sacrifice fly to Garcia increased the lead to 10-2 in the seventh and run-scoring singles by Doyle and Cuevas in the ninth completed the scoring.

Humbert finished the game strongly with a pair of strikeouts and pop-out in the bottom of the ninth. He allowed only one hit, didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game series against Cal State Stanislaus at 2 p.m. at Reeder Field.
