Golden Eagles Settle For DH Split With Otters

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had one dramatic late-inning rally in it on Saturday, but not two.

The Golden Eagles rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to stun Cal State Monterey Bay, 12-11, in the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader in Seaside, but the Golden Eagles stranded the tying runs on base in a 7-5 loss in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (5-8, 3-4 CCAA) had 25 hits in the doubleheader, while Cal State Monterey Bay (5-9, 2-5 CCAA) had 31.

Jesus Cuevas was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the opener, while Niko Garcia was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Trent Zaks was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Drew Vanisi had a two-run triple.

Cody Doyle was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap, while Zaks was 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI and Rodrigo Martinez was 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Reed Reznicek, the fourth of five Cal State L.A. pitchers in the opener, picked up the victory in Game 1 after allowing one hit and one earned run in 1 2/3 innings of work, while Marcos Casillas worked out of trouble in the ninth inning to record his third save of the season.

David Armas started and allowed 12 hits and six runs in five innings. He left with the game tied at 6-6. Greg Humbert pitched one scoreless inning of relief.

The Golden Eagles scored three times in the second inning of the opener thanks to a run-scoring single by Steven Luna and a two-run triple by Vanisi to tie the game at 3-3. After the Otters took a 4-3 lead, the Golden Eagles struck for three more runs in the third on run-scoring singles by Kyle Peralta, Cuevas and Zaks to take a 6-4 advantage.

The Otters tied it with two runs in the fifth and eventually took a 9-7 lead into the ninth. Cuevas, though, delivered a two-run double to tie it and a run-scoring double by Zaks gave the Golden Eagles a 10-9 lead. Zaks stole third and came home on a run-scoring single by Kevin Fontana and Fontana made it 12-9 when he scored on a run-scoring single by Casey Ryan.

Casillas gave up two runs with two outs in the ninth, but got the final out via strikeout to end it.

In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and never caught up.

Cal State L.A. made it 3-2 in the second when a fielder's choice by Zaks scored Peralta and Zaks stole second, drawing a throw to second that enabled Niko Garcia to score from third.

The Otters, though, responded with four runs in the third to make it 7-2.

Doyle's two-run single in the fourth cut the deficit to 7-4 and a run-scoring single by Rodrigo Martinez made it 7-5 in the fifth. Cal State L.A. put two on with only one out in the seventh, but could not score.

Ryan Keller went 5 2/3 innings and gave up 12 hits and seven runs. He blanked the Otters over his final three innings of work. Reznicek got the final out in the sixth on a strikeout to give the Golden Eagles a chance to rally in the seventh.

Cal State L.A. will conclude its four-game series against Cal State Monterey Bay with a single game on Sunday.
