LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team used a pair of outstanding pitching performances and some timely hitting to sweep a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles held on for an 8-5 win in the opener and then rallied from a 7-0 deficit to beat Sonoma State, 9-8, in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (17-15, 13-13 CCAA) collected 22 hits in the doubleheader, including a home run from
Manny Acosta.
Sonoma State (18-16, 16-10) was limited to just five hits in the opener by
Ryan Santhon and three relievers and the Seawolves were held in check after scoring seven times in the first inning of the nightcap.
David Arredondo gave the Golden Eagles a sensational relief outing in the nightcap after a rocky beginning. He came on with the bases loaded and two outs in the first inning and was greeted by a three-run double off the bat of Kevin Cramer. He also allowed a two-run single before escaping the inning.
From the second inning to the ninth, though, he gave up only four hits and enabled the Golden Eagles to climb back into the contest.
Arredondo was touched for two hits and one run in the ninth, but
Daniel Duran came on to get the final out for his first save of the season.
James Wharton had three hits and Duran and
Andrew Allen had two hits each in the nightcap.
Jeremy Weber scored a pair of runs.
Cal State L.A. made it 7-1 in the fourth on a run-scoring double from Wharton that scored
Joe Park and then took the lead with seven runs in the fifth. Sonoma State made three errors in the inning, including a pair of throwing miscues, and committed a balk. Allen started the inning with a single and
Samuel Arce followed with a double. Both runners advanced on a balk to make it 7-2. Weber followed with a run-scoring single and stole second. He later scored when Park reached on an error with one out. Park was caught stealing for the second out of the inning, but Duran got the rally re-energized with a walk. Wharton then singled and
Cliff Quick singled in Duran to make it 7-5. When the throw to third skipped away, Wharton scored to make it 7-6. Acosta reached on an infield single to drive in Wharton with the tying run and took second on a throwing error. Allen drove in the go-ahead run with a double.
The Golden Eagles made it 9-7 in the sixth. Weber was hit by a pitch, took second on a groundout and scored on a single by Duran.
Arredondo sailed into the ninth inning and recorded the first two outs before a double by Steven Filippi and a single by Joel Thys made it 9-8. That brought in Duran, who got the final out on a groundout to end it.
In the opener, Santhon struck out 11 in six dominating innings to get the win. He allowed two unearned runs in the fifth and a solo home run to Garrett Schwartz in the sixth and that was it.
Jacob Valenzuela pitched a scoreless seventh inning and
Cedar Morgan didn't allow a run in the eighth before running into trouble in the ninth. A home run by Thys started the inning and Sonoma State tacked on another run to make it 8-5.
Nick Rodarte came on and got a game-ending double play for his first save of the season.
The Golden Eagles jumped ahead early and built a 5-0 lead after three innings. Weber had a two-run single in the second and Wharton and Quick added run-scoring singles in the third.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Sonoma State to conclude the four-game series beginning at 11 a.m.
