Golden Eagles Settle For Doubleheader Split With Chico

Game 1 Box

Game 2 Box

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team continued its offensive barrage in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader opener with Chico State, but the bats fell silent in the nightcap.

After collecting 17 more hits in a 9-1 victory in the opener, the Golden Eagles managed just five hits in the nightcap and fell to the Wildcats, 9-1, in the nightcap. Cal State L.A. (13-12, 9-10 CCAA) had managed 30 runs and 41 hits while winning the first two games of the California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Chico State (24-9, 14-9 CCAA).

Ryan Santhon pitched a gem in the opener, allowing only three hits and one run in 7 2/3 outstanding innings. Chico State's Luke Barker then turned in a tremendous outing of his own in the nightcap, giving up just five hits and one run while going the distance in the seven-inning contest.

James Wharton had three hits and four RBI in the opener and delivered the big hit of the game, a three-run home run that highlighted a six-run sixth inning and built the Golden Eagles' lead to 9-0.

Jeremy Weber had three hits and scored twice in the opener, while Manny Acosta also had three hits. Daniel Duran, who was 6-for-6 in the series opener on Friday, added a single and two walks in his first three at bats on Saturday. Joe Park had two hits and scored twice, while Nick Rodarte also had two hits.

Santhon blanked the Wildcats over the first seven innings and left after allowing a solo home run to Chico State's Cody Foster with two outs in the eighth. Sergio Luna retired all four batters he faced to end it.

Chico State starter Troy Neiman gave up eight hits and three runs over six innings. The Golden Eagles then added nine hits and six runs against two relievers in the final two innings.

The Golden Eagles scored twice in the first inning and never looked back. Weber singled and took third on a double by Park. Duran walked and the runners all advanced on a wild pitch. A single by Wharton made it 2-0.

Cliff Quick delivered a run-scoring double in the fifth to make it 3-0 and Wharton's three-run home run put the game out of reach in the seventh.

Chico State turned the tables in the nightcap, due largely to Barker. The Wildcats also got going offensively, taking advantage of a wild Gabriel Asakura. The Golden Eagles' reigning CCAA Co-Pitcher of the Year walked four batters and hit two others in a shaky three-inning performance. He gave up five hits and allowed eight runs – six of them earned – over three innings. David Arredondo allowed five hits and one run over the next three innings and Jonathan Skura pitched a scoreless seventh inning while getting out of a bases-loaded jam.

Cody Webber had three hits and three RBI for the Wildcats, who broke the game open with six runs in the third. A run-scoring single by Rodarte made it 2-1 in the second, but that was the only run the Golden Eagles would score.

The Golden Eagles and Wildcats will conclude the four-game series on Sunday with a single game at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
