Two Golden Eagles Earn NCBWA All-Region Honors

LOS ANGELES -- Two members of Cal State LA's baseball team were named to the 2026 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division II West All-Region Team, the organization announced on Friday.

Outfielder Cesar Chavez and first baseman Omar Gonzalez both earned second-team honors on the West Region team that included players from the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Pacific West Conference. 

A total of 42 players were honored, 17 on each of the first and second teams and eight with honorable mention.

Zech Samayoa of Cal State San Marcos was named the West Region Player of the Year, Corbin Talley of Northwest Nazarene was named the West Region Pitcher of the Year and Walt White of Cal State Monterey Bay was named the West Region Coach of the Year.

Chavez, who had his best season yet with the Golden Eagles in 2026, hitting a career-best .349, which was second on the team, and scoring 43 runs, which was also second on the team. He had one home run, 26 RBI and also led the team with 13 stolen bases.

Gonzalez, in his first year with the program, set a new program record and was second in the CCAA with 18 home runs. He hit .293 with 18 home runs, a team-high 46 RBI and a team-high 44 runs. He also led the team 34 walks and a slugging percentage of .641.

Cal State LA finished the 2006 season with a 26-25 record and finished fourth in the CCAA with a 16-16 mark. The Golden Eagles qualified for the CCAA Tournament for the second straight season for the first time since 2017-18.
