LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team certainly enjoyed a Wednesday evening under the lights at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles got outstanding pitching from
Gabriel Asakura and
Ryan Santhon and home runs from
Jesus Cuevas and
Cliff Quick and posted an 11-1 win over defending NAIA champion Concordia. Cal State L.A. (3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak, while handing Concordia (3-1) its first loss of the season.
Asakura allowed only two hits over five scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Santhon worked the final four innings and gave up just one run on four hits to get the save. He didn't walk a batter and struck out six.
Quick and Cuevas led a 16-hit offensive attack for the Golden Eagles. Quick had three hits and drove in three runs, while Cuevas had a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Both collected their first home run of the season.
Chad Nacapoy had three hits and scored two runs, while
Manny Acosta had a pair of hits and scored a run.

Jake Hovis gave up four runs in two innings of work and Sean Buford allowed three runs over the final two innings. The Eagles managed six hits in the game, including a triple by Steven McMichael and a double by Aaron Gates.
The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the third inning.
Jordan Castro drove in the first run of the game with a groundout and
Peter Straka singled in the second run.
Cal State L.A. added two more in the fourth.
James Wharton was hit by a pitch and Quick followed with a two-run home run to left to make it 4-0. The Golden Eagles added three runs in the fifth to make it 7-0.
Daniel Duran drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Wharton doubled in a run and Quick singled in the final run.
Cuevas made it 8-0 with a home run leading off the sixth inning and Cal State L.A. scored three more times in the seventh. Cuevas reached on an error to drive in the first run and
Brian Compton added a two-run single.
Concordia got its lone run in the ninth on a run-scoring triple by McMichael.
Asakura was outstanding in his five innings of work. He dodged trouble in both the fourth and fifth innings, leaving the bases loaded in both. The Eagles loaded the bases in the fourth with no one out after an error and two hit batsmen, but Asakura got a strikeout, made a nice flip to home for a force after a slowly hit comebacker and got the last out on a fielder's choice. The Eagles loaded the bases again in the fifth with two out, but Asakura retired the last batter he faced on a strikeout.
Santhon was also brilliant, striking out six and not walking a batter over the final four innings.
Cal State L.A. will host an alumni game on Saturday and then return to action next Monday in a road game at Biola.
