RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw its season-opening two-game winning streak come to an end Friday at California Baptist's Totman Field.
The Golden Eagles, who had scored 23 in the first two games of a four-game series, managed only two on Friday and fell to the Lancers, 7-2, in a non-conference game. Cal State L.A. (2-1) stranded 12 runners on base and California Baptist (1-2) took control of the contest with a four-run fifth inning.
James Wharton slugged a two-run home run in the ninth inning for the only Cal State L.A. runs. The Golden Eagles managed seven hits against two California Baptist pitchers, but were unable to produce any runs until their final at bat.
David Arredondo started for the Golden Eagles and pitched four solid innings before tiring in the fifth. He was charged with six earned runs in his 4 2/3 inning stint after allowing eight hits, walking two and hitting three. He struck out four.
Daniel Duran allowed one hit and no runs over the next 1 2/3 innings,
Elliott Russell pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Wharton allowed a pair of hits and one run in the eighth.
Brian Compton had two hits for the Golden Eagles, while
Jesus Cuevas,
Jordan Castro, Duran, Wharton and
Chad Nacapoy each had one hit.
California Baptist's Jon Bengard blanked the Golden Eagles on three hits over the first five innings to get the win, while Matt Daugherty allowed the two ninth-inning runs in four innings of work and got the save.
The Golden Eagles scored their runs with two outs in the ninth. Castro singled and came home on Wharton's two-run home run.
The Golden Eagles will conclude the four-game series against California Baptist with a home game at Reeder Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
