CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team used a dramatic ninth-inning rally to win the opener of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Toro Field, but then saw the hosts even the score in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles scored five times in the ninth to post a 7-6 win in the opener, but Cal State Dominguez Hills got a game-winning home run leading off the bottom of the seventh to take the nightcap, 4-3. Cal State L.A. (10-4, 6-2 CCAA) took three games of the four-game series. All four games were decided by one run.
Brian Compton had the big hit in the opener, a grand slam in the ninth inning that tied the game at 6-6.
Joe Park followed with a double and scored the winning run on an error.
Cal State L.A. erased a 3-0 deficit in the nightcap, but Cal State Dominguez Hills got a leadoff home run from Matthew Young in the bottom of the seventh to win it.
Justin Harr had another strong start for the Golden Eagles in the opener, going seven strong innings and allowing only six hits and two runs. He walked four and struck out 11.
Cal State L.A. scored twice in the sixth inning on a two-run double by
Daniel Duran that drove in
Samuel Arce and
Jesus Cuevas. The Toros, though, tied it in the bottom of the inning and then scored four times in the eighth to take a 6-2 lead into the ninth.
James Wharton started the rally by reaching base on an error.
Cliff Quick was hit by a pitch and
Manny Acosta followed with a single to load the bases. Compton then belted a home run to left to tie the score at 6-6. Park then doubled with one out and scored the go-ahead run on an error.
Cedar Morgan worked around a one-out single in the ninth to earn his second save in as many days.
Sergio Luna, who got the Golden Eagles out of the eighth-inning jam, picked up the win.
Cuevas and Acosta had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.
In the nightcap,
Gabriel Asakura allowed three runs in the second inning, but then blanked the Toros for the remainder of his six-inning stint. He walked three and struck out nine.
Cal State L.A. the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth on a run-scoring single by
Scott Masik and then scored twice in the sixth to tie it. Quick led off with a home run to make it 3-2 and
David Compton had a run-scoring single to tie it at 3-3.
That's how the score stayed until Young's home run in the seventh.
Masik had two hits in the game for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with the opener of a four-game series at San Francisco State.
