CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had the last rally this time.
One day after surrendering a late lead, the Golden Eagles struck for five runs in the ninth inning to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 10-6, Saturday afternoon at Toro Field. Cal State L.A. (24-18) got a go-ahead single from
Michael Vinyard and a game-clinching three-run home run by
Noe Flores during the five-run ninth inning.
Vinyard had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored plus the game-winning RBI.
Andrew Allen was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while
Brett Whalen and
Joe Park scored two runs each.
David Arredondo pitched the last four innings for the Golden Eagles and picked up the win. He allowed five hits and just one run during his stint and blanked the Toros (19-22) over the final three innings.
Thomas Landeros started for the Golden Eagles and, after a rocky first inning, settled down and gave Cal State L.A. five effective innings. He gave up six hits and five runs, but didn't allow a run after the second inning.
David Fair, who picked up the win for the Toros in their 11-8 extra-inning win on Friday, couldn't duplicate his effort on Saturday. Coming in to get the save, he instead gave up Vinyard's go-ahead single and Flores' three-run home run.
Kyle Pond had a three-run home run for the Toros that staked Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 4-1 lead after the first inning.
The Golden Eagles scored first in the top of the opening frame, when a run-scoring double by
Brian Moon drove in Whalen. Pond's home run, though, was the finishing touch on the Toros' four-run response in the bottom of the inning.
The Golden Eagles got a run in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Allen and the Golden Eagles got two more in the fifth to pull to within 5-4. Vinyard singled and scored on a triple by Allen, who then scored on an error.
After the Toros extended their lead to 6-4, the Golden Eagles pulled to within 6-5 after Vinyard drew a walk in the eighth, took second on a balk, third on a wild pitch and then scored on anothe wild pitch.
That set the stage for the ninth inning heroics.
Elliott Russell got the rally started with a pinch-hit single and Whalen and Park drew walks to load the bases.
Brian Compton hit a one-out sacrifice fly to tie the score and Vinyard followed with his clutch two-out single to give the Golden Eagles the lead. Flores followed with his three-run home run that was more than enough for Arredondo to enjoy a more relaxed ninth inning.
Cal State L.A. will return to conference action with a four-game series at Cal State Stanislaus beginning on Sunday.
