Golden Eagles Drop Series Opener To CS San Bernardino

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team lost for the first time in California Collegiate Athletic Association competition on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles committed five errors and were unable to score after the second inning in a 6-3 loss to Cal State San Bernardino Thursday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (9-4, 4-1 CCAA) managed only one hit over the final four innings of the game.

Cal State San Bernardino (4-5, 2-1 CCAA) got a go-ahead single from Ethan Chapman in the top of the ninth inning. The Coyotes scored three times to break a 3-3 tie and then turned things over to closer Josh Pond, who struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.

The Golden Eagles wasted a strong outing from David Arredondo, who allowed seven hits and three unearned runs over six innings. Jacob Valenzuela blanked the Coyotes over the next two innings, but gave up a double to Virgil Chavira and the single to Chapman in the ninth and suffered his first loss in four decisions.

Lucas Sanford overcame a rocky second inning and went five solid innings for the Coyotes in his first start of the season. He gave up all three runs on four hits in the second inning, but kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard over his final three innings of work.

Josh Lee blanked Cal State L.A. on one hit over the next three innings to pick up the victory.

The Golden Eagles scored all three of their runs in the second. Brian Moon and Jordan Castro opened the inning with singles and Chris Matzner reached first on a bunt single to load the bases. Noe Flores followed with a single to drive in one run and a fielder's choice off the bat of Brian Compton scored Castro and made it 2-0. Manny Acosta drove in the third run on a sacrifice fly.

Cal State San Bernardino got on the board with an unearned run in the fifth. Erik Ornelas reached on an error and scored on a two-out single by Matt Haney.

The Coyotes tied the game in the sixth due in part to two more errors. Mike Newell and Matt Winn scored when a high throw from second baseman Moon, who had snared a line drive off the bat of Chavira for the second out, glanced off the glove of Matzner and out of play.

The Coyotes then got the game-winning runs in the ninth. Chavira doubled to center to start the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice by Ornelas. Chapman followed with a single to drive in Chavira. Anthony Lopez then came on for Valenzuela, but another run scored on an error and the final run scored on a single by Newell.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a game against Cal State Bernardino at Reeder Field. The start time has been moved up from 2 p.m. to noon.
