LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got an early goal, but was forced to settle for a hard-fought 1-1 tie with Cal Poly Pomona Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from
Gabbi Segall, but Cal Poly Pomona got the equalizer in the 68
th minute and the two teams settled for a 1-1 tie Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (10-3-3, 8-3-3) remains in second place in the CCAA South Division with 27 points, but slip six points behind first-place UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles are also just one point ahead of North Division co-leaders Chico State and Sonoma State.
Cal State L.A. tied Cal Poly Pomona (7-5-4, 5-5-4 CCAA) for the second time this season.
The Golden Eagles had a 24-17 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in the two overtime periods. The Golden Eagles also had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to convert any of them into goals.
Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Jessie Walworth made eight saves for the Golden Eagles, while Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Emily Miller made nine saves for the Broncos.
The Golden Eagles' only goal of the game came early when Segall notched her second of the season. She received a cross from
Janet Mendez outside the box and was able to hit a one-touch shot into the goal.
Even though they trailed, 1-0, the Broncos had their chances and Valerie Strawn, in particular, was hard to slow down. She had Cal Poly Pomona's best chance of the opening half when she took a shot that Walworth had to making a diving finger-tip save to keep out of the net.
The Broncos kept the pressure on in the second half and eventually tied it up. Jennifer Rivera got to a loose ball on the right side of the box and lofted a shot that settled into the net just inside the far post.
The Golden Eagles had a golden opportunity to end it in regulation, but a shot by
Cari Gill off a corner kick was deflected by the leg of Miller and out of danger in the 86
th minute.
Miller made another outstanding save on a bid by
Norie Pablo in the first overtime, while Cal Poly Pomona's Christina Carriaga made a strong run down the field and into the box before an onrushing Walworth was able to come out and smother the ball before it was shot.
The Golden Eagles were strong in the second overtime period and Mendez had four shots, including one with less than a minute left that was stopped by Miller.
