Golden Eagles Conclude Season With Tie At San Marcos

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team turned in another strong performance on Thursday, but it was not enough to earn a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

The Golden Eagles and Cal State San Marcos battled to a 0-0 tie on Thursday in The Cage, but the result ended up knocking both tournament hopefuls out of postseason play. Cal State LA (7-5-6, 4-4-3 CCAA) and Cal State San Marcos (7-5-5, 4-4-3 CCAA) both finished with 15 points, which left them in a tie for seventh. Cal State East Bay beat Cal State Dominguez Hills to jump both contenders and move into a tie for fifth with Cal Poly Humboldt with 17 points and one of the final two spots in the six-team tournament.

Cal State LA saw an 11-year string of CCAA Tournament appearances come to a disappointing end.

The Golden Eagles gave it their all and posted their eighth shutout of the season, but they simply couldn't find a winning goal against a stout Cal State San Marcos defense.

Both teams had chances in the final minute with Cal State San Marcos having a shot by Brittany Brown go off the crossbar and Cal State LA's Itzel Ramirez firing off a shot that was saved by Emma Cavillo in the waning seconds.

Rihanna Tryels had four saves for the Golden Eagles, two in each half, while Cavillo had five saves for the Cougars.

Cal State San Marcos had a 13-6 edge in shots, including an 8-3 advantage in the second half. The Cougars also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, holding a 5-1 edge in the first half.

Jacqueline Marin had two shots - both on goal - for the Golden Eagles, while Itzel Ramirez, Syra Valdez and Delia Bocanegra had shots on goal.

Cal State LA was unbeaten over its final six games with a 3-0-3 record that almost lifted the Golden Eagles into the postseason.
