POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team turned in another outstanding late-season performance with a 1-1 tie at defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles, who are now 1-0-2 against the conference's top three teams with a win over Chico State and ties in their last two games against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona, will need a win in their regular-season finale at Cal State San Marcos to have any chance at reaching the conference tournament for a 12th straight season. The Golden Eagles and Cougars are tied for sixth in the conference with Cal State East Bay. All three teams have 14 points and are two points back of fifth-place Cal Poly Humboldt.
The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Cal State LA (7-5-5, 4-4-2 CCAA) has scored points in five straight games and six of seven as the Golden Eagles make a late push for the tourney.
The Golden Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a goal by
Itzel Ramirez and held the advantage until the 82nd minute when Cal Poly Pomona (13-1-3, 6-1-3 CCAA) got the equalizer from Liberty Ortiz.
The game was a defensive struggle as Cal State LA did a masterful job of containing an explosive Cal Poly Pomona offense. After giving up the first five shots of the game, the Golden Eagles found their footing and limited the Broncos to just four shots and and no second-half corner kicks.
The Broncos finished with a 9-4 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, although Cal State LA had the only corner kick in the second half.
Rihanna Tryels made three saves for the Golden Eagles.
Ramirez scored her fourth goal of the season just 1:02 into the second half to give the Golden Eagles the lead.Â
Delia Bocanegra had two shots for Cal State LA, while Ramirez and
Reyna Roman were also credited with shot attempts.
