2025 Cal State LA Women's Soccer - Season Summary
LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team posted another winning season in 2025 and was in a spirited battle for a postseason bid all the way to the final day of the regular season.
The Golden Eagles, with a largely new cast in 2025, had to fight back from a slow start and finally got things turned around for an exciting finish to the season. Cal State LA was unbeaten over its final six games, but couldn't quite reach the California Collegiate Athletic Association Touirnament for a 12th straight season. The Golden Eagles were still alive entering the final day, but a 0-0 tie at Cal State San Marcos ended the season.
Cal State LA was outstanding defensively once again and was one of the top teams in the conference in preventing goals. The Golden Eagles allowed two goals in a game only once in 11 conference contests and only twice in 18 matches overall. The Golden Eagles allowed only 12 goals all season and were third in the CCAA and 33rd in the nation in goals against average (0.67 per game).
That defense led to close games and 13 of the Golden Eagles' 18 games were decided by one goal or ended in a tie. Cal State LA lost only once by two goals - a 2-0 loss to Point Loma early in the season - while recording four victories by two goals.
Cal State LA faced top competition once again in its non-conference schedule and got off to a 3-1-3 start that included a 2-0 non-conference win at conference foe Cal State Dominguez Hills and wins over Westmont and Vanguard. The Golden Eagles scored a season-high three goals in a 3-1 win at Vanguard, getting scores from
Jacqueline Marin,
Kristin Mijares and
Delia Bocanegra in a five-minute span late in the first half.
After a 2-0 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills - with first-half goals from
Itzel Ramirez and Bocanegra - completed non-conference play, the Golden Eagles dug themselves a hole they ultimately couldn't dig out of with an 0-3 start in conference play. Cal State LA opened with three straight losses - 1-0 road setbacks at UC Merced and Stanislaus State and a home 2-1 defeat to Cal State Monterey Bay.
Cal State LA played one of its best games of the season in a 2-0 shutout of Chico State on Oct. 12, but followed that up with a 1-0 loss at Cal State East Bay, leaving the Golden Eagles with a 1-4 conference mark and only three points.
With their backs against the wall and in dire need of points, the Golden Eagles rallied for a 2-1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on second-half goals by Marin and Ramirez, recorded a 2-0 win over San Francisco State on goals by Mjares and
Syra Valdez and got a third straight win with a 1-0 shutout over Cal Poly Humboldt on a goal by
Reyna Roman.
The win got the Golden Eagles back into contention for a conference tournament spot, but they faced three tough opponents down the stretch and were held to ties in all three games. A second-half goal by
Celine Gehrig lifted the Golden Eagles to a 1-1 tie at home against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State LA held a 1-0 lead over defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona on a goal by Ramirez in the 47th minute, only to see the Broncos tie it late to get the draw.
That set up Cal State LA for a pivotal game at Cal State San Marcos in the regular-season finale and a 0-0 tie ultimately knocked both teams out of the conference tournament.
Bocanegra led Cal State LA in scoring for the season with three goals and four assists for 10 points. Ramirez had a team-high four goals and was second in scoring with nine points. Marin ended the season with three goals, while Gehrig and Mijares finished with two goals each.
Cal State LA got strong goalkeeper from a pair of freshman.
Kendyl Sumlin started the first 12 games of the season before sustaining an injury. She made 34 saves and had five shutouts.
Rihanna Tryels came on for the final six and went 3-0-3 with 23 saves and three shutouts.
Gehrig earned All-CCAA second-team honors in an impressive Cal State LA debut, while Bocanegra, Ramirez and Tryels earned All-CCAA honorable mention.
Cal State LA also had three players -
Peytyn Mize,
Lindsey Metcalfe and
Itzel Ramirez - earn Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communications
