SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team needed some more late-game magic to avoid what would have been a tough loss at Cal State San Bernardino.
Taylor Rivas got the equalizer with just 2:13 remaining in regulation and the Golden Eagles and Coyotes battled to a 1-1 tie in a California Collegiate Athletic Assocation game at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (8-1-5, 6-1-5) stretched its unbeaten streak to six games with its third tie during that stretch.
The tie, though, prevented Cal State L.A., ranked 13th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, from moving into a tie for the CCAA South Division lead. The Golden Eagles, with one point for Sunday's tie, now have 23 points in conference play and trail division co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills by two points.
It was the second time this season that Rivas scored late in regulation to lift the Golden Eagles to a tie. He also scored with 1:15 left in regulation to lift Cal State L.A. to a 1-1 tie at Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona. On Sunday, he got to a ball sent into the box by
Rosario Bras and knocked it home to erase a 1-0 deficit.
Cal State L.A. ended the game with a 24-14 advantage in shots, but a slow start hurt the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. had only five first-half shots, including just one on goal, and fell behind early, 1-0. The Golden Eagles had a 16-4 edge in the second half, but only four of those attempts were on goal.
Waleed Cassis made seven saves for the Golden Eagles, including a pair of saves in the second overtime period. The Coyotes had an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Tanner Olingerr made five saves in goal for the Coyotes, including one on Cal State L.A.'s
Derek Faulkner in the final seconds of regulation.
Rivas and
Jason Swope had five shots each for the Golden Eagles.
The Coyotes got off to the better start and took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Brett Faggioni scored off a Jason Galarza corner kick. Although Cal State L.A. finished the first half even in shots, only an attempt by
Marvin Sandoval in the 38th minute was on goal.
Cal State L.A. stepped up its attack in the second half, but, once again, the majority of attempts were off the mark until Rivas connected to break the shutout bid.
The Golden Eagles had a pair of chances in the first overtime, but an attempt by Swope went wide and Faulkner had a bid stopped at the end of the period.
Cassis made two saves early in the second overtime period, while Swope had an attempt go wide in the 105th minute. Faggioni had a bid for his second goal as time was winding down, but his header was wide.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against San Francisco State.
