No. 1 Golden Eagles Record Their Fourth Straight Shutout

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team kept its unblemished record intact Friday night.

The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from Taylor Rivas and made it stand up in a 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over San Francisco State at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (4-0, 3-0 CCAA), ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, won its fourth consecutive games by shutout.

San Francisco State (2-3, 0-3 CCAA) had a 12-9 edge in shots, including a 7-2 advantage in the second half while Cal State L.A. was holding its edge. Only one shot in each half was on net, though, and Golden Eagle goalie James Irwin made two saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

Michael McNeill made two saves for San Francisco State.

The Gators also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks with all five coming in the first half.

The only goal of the game came in the 35th minute and was the first one scored this season in the opening half by Cal State L.A. Marvin Sandoval, in his first action of the season, sent a cross from the left corner on a free kick toward the box. Brennen Brodersen headed it to Rivas, who sent it into the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

San Francisco State's best chance for a goal came about two minutes later when a shot by Tony Terrazas went off the crossbar. Irwin also made a nice, diving save of a header by Charles Conway in the 62nd minute. The Gators' final chance came in the 86th minute, but an attempt by Edgar Villagrana went wide.

The Golden Eagles got strong play once again from defenders Tony Hernandez, Julian Ringhof, Rivas and Brodersen. The Golden Eagles have allowed only 10 shots on goal in their first four games.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a  home match against Cal State Monterey Bay.
