Game 2 Box

POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team pulled out a win in Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader with Cal Poly Pomona, but the Golden Eagles were forced to settle for a split.

A two-run eighth-inning double by Chris Matzner gave the Golden Eagles a 7-6 win in the opener, but Cal Poly Pomona scored eight times in the second inning of the nightcap and went on to a 10-2 victory. Cal State L.A. (15-18, 13-11) split the four-game series with Cal Poly Pomona (19-18, 11-13).

The Golden Eagles scored five times in the first inning of the day, but Cal Poly Pomona scored twice in the first and three times in the third to tie it and took a 6-5 lead with a run in the sixth. Matzner, though, delivered a clutch, two-out double to drive in Joe Park and Jesus Campos with the go-ahead runs.

Matt Stropoli worked around a leadoff double in the ninth inning to preserve the win. Stropoli pitched three scoreless innings to get the win and improve his record to 5-1.

The Golden Eagles scored all five runs in the first inning with two outs. Sam Wiley singled in Matzner for the first run and Jordan Castro, Max Moya, Campos and Park followed with run-scoring singles.

A dropped fly ball led to a pair of unearned runs in the first inning for the Broncos, who cashed in with a triple by Travis Taijeron and a sacrifice fly by Tyson Edwards. The Broncos tied it with three runs in the third and drove Cal State L.A. starter Rory Young from the game. Matt Clark came on in relief and allowed only one hit and a run over 3 1/3 solid innings to keep the Golden Eagles in the game.

Campos walked and Park was hit by a pitch to set up the winning eighth-inning rally. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on Matzner's double.

Cal State L.A. took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, but that advantage disappeared in a hurry. Matt Miraldi contributed a two-run single with the bases loaded to give the Golden Eagles the early lead.

Cal Poly Pomona scored one in the first and eight more in the second to quickly take control of the game. The Golden Eagles managed only seven hits in the nightcap and also left nine runners on base.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with the opener of a four-game series against Chico State at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
