SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a nailbiter to start its day, but left nothing to chance in the nightcap of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles got a run in the seventh and a run in the ninth to take the opener, 3-2, and then exploded for 19 hits to post a 17-7 win in the nightcap Saturday at Otter Baseball Field. Cal State L.A. (10-10, 8-6 CCAA) has won four straight games.
Joe Park had the game-winning hit in the opener, delivering a ninth-inning double to drive in
Jesus Campos and break a 2-2 tite. The Golden Eagles had erased a 2-1 deficit when
Mark Sunga slugged a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Matt Stropoli pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief to get the win.
Wally Goodline worked the first 6 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits and two runs.
Sunga, Park and
Cliff Quick had two hits each.
The nightcap was a wild one that included 10 runs in the first inning, five by each team. The Golden Eagles trailed 6-5 after three innings, but got seven runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to break the game open.
Matt Strom settled down after a rocky first inning and pitched five innings to get the win. Strom allowed nine hits and six earned runs.

Matt Clark and Quick each pitched a scoreless inning to finish up for the Golden Eagles.
Sam Wiley had a huge game in the nightcap, going 3-for-5 with seven runs batted in. Sunga had three more hits and drove in four runs. Wiley had a two-run double in the first inning and Sunga had a two-run single to highlight the five-run opening inning.
Jordan Smeds had two hits and drove in four runs for Cal State Monterey Bay (5-18, 1-13 CCAA).
After Cal State Monterey Bay countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning and took a 6-5 lead in the third, the Golden Eagles struck for seven runs in the fourth.
Chris Matzner singled in a run to tie it at 6-6 and
Mario Ramirez singled in a run to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Wiley drove in a run with a single, Sunga drove in two with a single and two more runs scored on an error later in the inning.
Wiley hit a grand slam in the fifth to break the game open. The homer was his sixth of the season.
Matzner scored three runs for the Golden Eagles, while
Matt Miraldi had three hits and scored a pair of runs.
Jordan Castro had a solo home run for the Golden Eagles in the ninth.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay beginning at 10 a.m.
