SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was on the wrong end of a dramatic one-run decision Thursday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
The Golden Eagles battled back from an early 4-1 deficit, but gave up a walkoff home run to Cal State San Bernardino in the 11th inning and lost, 6-5, in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
Cal State L.A. (5-6, 3-3 CCAA) got a solo home run from
Sam Wiley and a two-run home run by
Max Moya.
Wally Goodline started for the Golden Eagles and worked 6 1/3 innings.
Matt Stropoli tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Cal State San Bernardino upped its conference record to 8-1 with the victory.
The Golden Eagles managed only seven hits, while Cal State San Bernardino collected 12 hits. Both teams left seven runners on base.
Wiley had three of the Golden Eagles' seven hits.
Cal State L.A. got a run in the first on a one-out double by
Jesus Campos and a two-out single by Wiley. The Golden Eagles then fell behind, 4-1, before a solo shot by Wiley and a two-run home run by Moya in the sixth tied it. The Coyotes regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Cal State L.A. tied it in the ninth.
Chris Matzner drove in the run on a fielder's choice.
The score stayed tied at 5-5 until Cal State San Bernardino's Chris LeFay hit his game-winning home run with one out in the 11th off of
Camron Collard.
The series will continue with a single game in San Bernardino beginning at 2 p.m.
