Golden Eagles Drop Season Finale To Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was unable to close out its 2010 season on a high note.

The Golden Eagles allowed a first-half goal and never could get untracked in a 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association loss to Cal Poly Pomona Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (9-7-1, 8-7-1 CCAA), which harbored hopes for a fifth straight trip to the CCAA Championship Tournament, instead suffered back-to-back shutout losses to end the season.

All seven Cal State L.A. losses this season were by shutout.

Cal Poly Pomona (10-7-1, 8-7-1 CCAA) completed a season sweep of the Golden Eagles and pulled into a tie with Cal State L.A. in the CCAA South Division.

The Broncos scored the only goal of the game in the 21st minute. Juan Mejia slammed home the rebound of a shot by Tyler Reinhart for his third goal of the season. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Thaddeus Caraway made a diving save to deny Reinhart, but Mejia got to the rebound first and knocked it into the net.

Cal State L.A. had an 18-13 advantage in shots an a 9-7 edge in corner kicks in a game that featured plenty of offensive attacks from both sides considering it was a 1-0 game. Caraway made six saves for the Golden Eagles, while James Iles made five saves for Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State L.A. had its chances, but was unable to convert. Brennan Brodersen hit a header off a corner kick just wide of the goal early in the game and Hector Macias got free in the box and sent a shot just high.

After Mejia put the Broncos ahead, Luis Gonzalez almost gave Cal Poly Pomona a 2-0 lead, but he flipped a shot just wide of the goal.

The Golden Eagles' best scoring chance came when David Hauser sent a through pass to Gonzalo Pulgar, who, with the goalkeeper out, sent a shot just high of the goal.

Adam Hughes gave the Golden Eagles a spark in the second half. He had a header go just over the crossbar in the opening minutes of the second half and had another opportunity later that was saved by Iles.

Caraway kept the Golden Eagles in the game when he was able to deflect a shot by Mejia just off the crossbar. Later, he came out of the goalie box to cut down the angle on a shot by Anthony Salcedo and got enough of the shot to deflect it just outside the far post.

Cal State L.A.'s last good chance came off a free kick by Hauser that was headed by Brodersen just wide of the far post.

Cal State L.A. honored Simon Volk, Joe Davis, Hector Macias, Chris Rangel, Brennan Brodersen, Tony Hernandez and Anton Gunnarsson in pre-match ceremonies as part of Senior Day.
