SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team used a big scoring outburst in the first half and its stout defense to post another big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles got goals from
Jason Swope,
Kristian Gaustad and
Spencer Tripp and beat Cal State San Bernardino, 3-1, Friday at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (10-0-1, 8-0-1 CCAA) won its eighth straight match. The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Cal State L.A. won for the second time this season against Cal State San Bernardino (8-3, 4-3 CCAA). The Golden Eagles got a penalty kick goal in the final minute and then won the game, 3-2, in overtime on Sept. 13.
The Golden Eagles now have 25 points in conference play and lead the CCAA South Division.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 10-3 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in the first half. Cal State San Bernardino had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, but was unable to score until a goal in the 76th minute.
Tobias Hummel made one save in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Cal State San Bernardino goalie Arath De La Rocha made four saves.
The Golden Eagles scored twice in the first 15 minutes to take early control of the game. Swope put Cal State L.A. on the board in the ninth minute when he got a pass from
Federico Cino and placed a low shot inside the far post for his fourth goal of the season.
Gaustad made it 2-0 just six minutes later when he headed in a pass from Swope for his third goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles held the 2-0 lead at halftime and then boosted the advantage to 3-0 when Tripp scored from point-blank range with an assist from
Chris Rangel. It was the second goal of the season for Tripp, who scored a goal in the waning seconds to lift the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 win in San Bernardino late in the 2007 season.
The Coyotes got their lone goal in the 76th minute. Demetri Burgos took a low shot that went inside the far post for his first goal of the season. Julian Garcia had the assist.
Gaustad had a big match for the Golden Eagles. He had a game-high five shots, four of them on goal. Swope was also active with a goal and an assist. Swope had the game-winner in overtime when the Golden Eagles edged the Coyotes, 3-2, Sept. 13 in Los Angeles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a conference match at Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
