Biography

2024: Had another sensational season for the Golden Eagles in his final season with the program. Earned first-team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches and D2 Conference Commissioners Association. Was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s Defender of the Year and earned first-team all-conference honors for a second straight season. Started all 21 games for the Golden Eagles and led the team with 1,857 minutes played. Was also second on the team in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points. Earned CCAA Player of the Week honors twice – for the weeks of Sept. 23-29 and Oct. 7-13. Scored his first goal of the season in a 4-1 win over Colorado School of Mines on Sept. 20 and got his second to open the scoring in a 2-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 28. Scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Sonoma State on Oct. 11 and got the game-winner in the 85th minute of a 2-1 win over Cal Poly Humboldt on Oct. 13. Recorded two assists in a game for the first time in a 3-3 tie against Cal State East Bay on Oct. 25 and added an assist in a 3-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in a first-round CCAA Tournament game in University Stadium on Nov. 10. For his career, appeared in 61 games with 59 starts. Played a total of 5,181 minutes. Had six goals and five assists for 17 points.

2023: Had a tremendous season for the Golden Eagles and was one of the top defenders in the nation in his second year on the field for the program. Appeared in 20 games and started 19 times. Played a total of 1,721 minutes. Had one goal and one assists for three points. Earned third-team All-America honors from both the United Soccer Coaches and D2 Conference Commissioners Association. Also earned first-team All-West Region honors from both organizations. Earned first-team All-CCAA honors and was named to the CCAA All-Tournament team. Scored the first goal of the game on a header off a free kick in the 29th minute of a 2-0 win over Azusa Pacific on Sept. 12. Picked up an assist on a goal by Bryan Ortega in the 18th minute of a 5-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 15. Played a season-high 110 minutes in an NCAA national quarterfinal game against Colorado State Pueblo on Dec. 3.

2022: Had an outstanding season for the Golden Eagles in his first year on the field for the program. Appeared in all 20 games with 19 starts. Played a total of 1,603 minutes. Was second on the team in minutes played. Had one goal and one assist for three points. Earned All-CCAA honorable mention. Made his Cal State LA debut and played 54 minutes in a season-opening 6-0 win over Saint Martin’s on Aug. 25. Made his first career start and played all 90 minutes in a 1-0 win at Simon Fraser on Aug. 27. Picked up his first career point with an assist on a goal by Oliver Diaz in the 47th minute of a 4-0 win over San Francisco State on Oct. 16. Scored his first career goal with a score in the 65th minute of a 4-0 win at Stanislaus State on Oct. 21.

2021: Was on the roster for the national champions, but did not compete in any games for the Golden Eagles.

2020: Earned 2020-21 CCAA All-Academic honors in his first year with the program. Team did not compete due to COVID-19.

At Chaparral High School: Competed in soccer, volleyball and football. Earned first-team All-League honors in one season and second-team All-League recognition in another.

Personal: Son of Chris and Dana Portis. Earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and is now pursuing a Master’s degree. Enjoys surfing, gym, basketball, jet skiing and volleyball. Lists winning the 2021 national championship with Cal State LA as his most exciting experience in sports.
