Cal State LA Athletics

2017: Had a tremendous season in his final year with the program. Appeared and started in all 22 games for the Golden Eagles. Played a total of 2,053 minutes. Made 85 saves and had a goals against average of 0.83. Had a saves percentage of .817. Recorded 10 shutouts and had a record of 14-5-3. Made his biggest save of the season when he stopped a shootout try to lift the Golden Eagles past Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament semi-final on Nov. 3. Followed that up with a career-high eight saves in a 2-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the tournament title game on Nov. 5. Was named the CCAA Tournament Defensive Most Valuable Player. Earned second-team All-West Region honors from the D2 Conference Commissioners' Association. Received All-CCAA honorable mention. For his career, appeared in 39 games with 38 starts. Played a total of 3,493 minutes. Had a 25-7-5 record. Had a goals against average of 0.67. Made 131 saves and had a saves percentage of .834. Finished his career No. 2 in goals against average and No. 10 in career saves. 

2016: Had an outstanding season for the Golden Eagles. Appeared in 11 games with 10 starts. Had a 6-2-1 record with five shutouts. Recorded a goals against average of 0.57 and a saves percentage of .824. Came up with a season-high six saves in a 2-1 win at Cal Poly Pomona in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament. Allowed one or fewer goals in nine of his 10 starts. Made five saves in his first start of the season, a 0-0 tie at Concordia Irvine. 

2015: Played well for the Golden Eagles while seeing action in four games. Went 3-0-1 in four starts and allowed only one goal. Had two shutouts and a combined shutout among his starts. Made a total of 13 saves and had a save percentage of .929. Played a total of 335 minutes and had a goals against average of 0.27. Made one save in the first half of a 4-0 win at Saint Martin’s on Sept. 5. Recorded shutouts in his next two appearances. Made three saves in a 2-0 victory against Humboldt State on Sept. 20 and recorded five saves in a 5-0 win over Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 7. Made four saves in a 1-1 tie against Chico State on Oct. 11 in his final start of the season. 

2014: Served as the team’s backup goalkeeper, but did not compete in any games.

2013: Played well for the Golden Eagles in two early-season starts and helped the program set defensive records. Got the opening-game start and posted a shutout in a 3-0 win over Azusa Pacific on Sept. 5. Made two saves in the victory. Got the start and played 73 minutes in a 6-1 win over Saint Martin’s on Sept. 8. Made three saves. Played a total of 163 minutes and did not allow a goal. Helped program set a new single-season mark for goals against average and tie a program mark for shutouts in a season.

2012: Joined the Cal State L.A. program, but did not compete in any games.

At Millikan High School: Helped team win a CIF championship in 2012 and Moore League titles in 2011 and 2012. Earned All-CIF honors and was named the Moore League’s Goalkeeper of the Year. Was also a member of the 2012 Press-Telegram Dream Team. Competed in soccer, volleyball and football in high school.

Personal: Son of Hector and Laura Barrera. Majoring in human resources. Enjoys miniature golfing and hiking. Lists winning the NCAA Wet Region title with Cal State LA and the CIF Division I title with Millikan High School as his most exciting experiences in sports. Notes he played with the LA Galaxy U-18 team.
