Golden Eagles Win Opener With A Pitching Gem

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got its first shutout of the season with a pitching gem and some outstanding infield defense in a California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Ismael Quintero and Jared Robles combined for the shutout and Omar Gonzalez belted his conference-leading 15th home run of the season in a 2-0 win over the Toros Thursday at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (21-17, 11-10 CCAA) took the opener of a four-game conference series in a tight battle with Cal State Dominguez Hills (15-19, 7-14 CCAA).

Quintero turned in the best start of his Cal State LA career and limited the Toros to just three singles in seven outstanding innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Robles allowed three hits, also all singles, over the final two innings to pick up his second save of the season. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

The shutout was the first for Cal State LA since a 6-0 win over Cal State San Marcos on March 1, 2025, when Brandon Gutierrez tossed a one-hit shutout over seven innings. It was also the first nine-inning shutout since James Mendez and Greg Humbert combined to blank Cal State San Bernardino in a 13-0 shutout on May 5, 2018.

Quintero was brilliant working out of jams early. He stranded six Cal State Dominguez Hills runners over the first three innings. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced before turning things over to Robles.

He was backed by some strong defense as well, highlighted by a pair of back-to-back fielding gems by third baseman Alberto Prado in the sixth inning. Shortstop Ethan Gonzalez made a nice play as well for the third out of the inning and Quintero retired the Toros in order in the seventh inning to complete his outing.

Jordan Townsley pitched well for the Toros and limited Cal State LA to just five hits and one run over five innings.

Cal State LA scored the first run of the game in the fifth. Lee punched a single to right and moved over to third base after a pair of wild pitches. After Omar Gonzalez walked, Adam Axtell flared a hit into right-centerfield to drive in Lee and break the scoreless tie.

Gonzalez made it 2-0 with a solo home run to right leading off the seventh inning. The conference  home run leader now has four home runs and nine runs batted in over his last five games.

Ben Lee went 3-for-4 with one run scored for the Golden Eagles.

The series will continue with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. with the series finale now set for Saturday at 1 p.m. as the teams try to avoid expected rain over the weekend.
