LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got to experience the full range of emotions in a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday.
There was frustration after the Toros slugged a pair of ninth-inning home runs to erase a two-run deficit in the opener and elation in the bottom of the inning in a dramatic 8-7 victory and a pitching gem and late rally to savor in a 7-0 win in the nightcap. Cal State LA (23-17, 13-10 CCAA)Â has won the first three games of the California Collegiate Athletic Association series and pulled into third place in the conference, just 1 1/2 games out of first.
The opener had a wild finish after the Golden Eagles, behind a solid start from
Alejandro Huezo and two scoreless innings of relief from
Jake Spence, took a 6-4 lead into the ninth. A game-tying two-run home run from Quinn Johnson was immediately followed by a long solo home run from Tyler Usher and the Toros (15-21, 7-16 CCAA) suddenly had a 7-6 lead.
The Golden Eagles, though, fought right back and after
Adam Axtell led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, he scored on a run-scoring single by
Alberto Prado.
Ethan Gonzalez sacrificed Prado to second base, and, after a two-out intentional walk to
Jonathan Manuel,
Kadyn Victorian singled to right-center to drive in Prado with the winning run.
The second game also had some late drama as Manuel and Zachary Lopez matched zeroes into the fifth inning before the Golden Eagles erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
Omar Gonzalez broke the scoreless tie with his conference-leading 16th home run, a two-run shot to right-center. Before the inning was over, the Golden Eagles had collected four more hits and five more runs.
Manuel took it from there, tossing six shutout innings, to pick up his team-high sixth win of the season. He allowed six hits - all singles - and walked four with five strikeouts.
Alejandro Morales completed the shutout with a scoreless seventh inning.
In the opener, Huezo allowed seven hits and four runs in six innings with two walks and six strikeouts and was in line for his sixth win of the season before the Toros' late rally.
Prado had a sensational game in the opener, going 4-for-5 with four runs and four runs batted in. He hit a three-run home run in the first inning, added a pair of doubles, and then the game-tying single in the bottom of the ninth.
Ben Lee, Axtell and Victorian had two hits each.
Prado's three-run home run in the first inning staked Huezo to an early lead. After the Toros scored twice in the second, the Golden Eagles made it 4-2 in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring single by Lee.
The Toros, though, closed to within 4-3 when Ben Saitz doubled in a run in the fourth and then tied it in the fifth on Johnson's first home run of the game. Â
Cal State LA regained the lead after Prado doubled and later scored on a two-out balk in the bottom of the inning and a run-scoring pinch-hit single by
Carson Panarisi extended the lead to 6-4 in the seventh, setting up the wild rollercoaster ride of a finish in the ninth.
In the nightcap,
Cesar Chavez was 3-for-3 with one RBI and
Omar Gonzalez and
Ethan Gonzalez had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.
The game was scoreless until Chavez was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth and was retired on a fielder's choice off the bat of Lee. Gonzalez then belted his go-ahead home run on an 0-2 pitch to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Axtell reached on an error and promptly stole second. Prado walked and
Ethan Gonzalez singled to drive in Axtell making it 3-0.
Panarisi singled in another run to make it 4-0 and
Kai Penuelas had a run-scoring single to make it 5-0. Panarisi scored on a balk to make it 6-0 and Chavez delivered a run-scoring single to complete the rally.
Cal State LA will conclude the series against Cal State Dominguez Hills with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
