Golden Eagles Fall Just Short In Series Finale

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team fell into a hole it simply couldn't get out of in the California Collegiate Athletic Association series finale against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 6-1 and had the tying runs at the plate in both the seventh and ninth innings, but ultimately fell to the Toros, 6-4, Saturday at Reeder Field. Alberto Prado blasted a pair of potential home run balls in his final two at bats, one with the bases loaded in the seventh that Malik Balloue caught just in front of the left-field fence with an outstanding effort and the other a shot to straightaway center - the deepest part of the park -  that was hauled in by Zac Ragland for the final out of the game. That ball in particular would have been a home run in any other part of the field except for where he belted it to - straightaway centerfield.

Cal State LA (23-18, 13-11 CCAA) won three of the four games in the series against Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-21, 9-15).

Brandon Gutierrez pitched six strong innings, allowing only five hits and one earned run, but he took the loss. An errant toss to first base in the sixth led to a pair of unearned runs that gave the Toros the lead. Gutierrez walked four and struck out four.

Chris Lozano allowed only one hit over 2 2/3 scoreless inning for the Golden Eagles.

Chris Cornelius went five innings for the Toros, allowing seven hits and one unearned run, to get the win for the Toros.

Omar Gonzalez had a hit and reached base three times while scoring a pair of runs for the Golden Eagles and Adam Axtell went 1-for-2 with two more RBI.

Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out double from Axtell that scored Omar Gonzalez. Gutierrez blanked the Toros until the fifth when Cal State Dominguez Hills got a run-scoring single by Tristan Usher. The Toros then took the lead with two runs in the sixth, one scoring on a throwing error and the other on a squeeze bunt by Ragland.

The Toros made it 6-1 in the seventh. Domenik Cervantes delivered a two-run single and Nigel Buckley added a run-scoring single as well. Chris Lozano came on and got the final two outs of the inning, including a bases-loaded strikeout to keep the Golden Eagles in the contest.

Kadyn Victorian singled to lead off the seventh, took second on a groundout and moved to third on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Ben Lee. Omar Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Axtell drove in another run with a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-2. Prado then belted his fly ball that wound up being a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 and Ethan Gonzalez reached on an error that made it 6-4.

Axtell was hit by a pitch with two outs in the ninth and Prado unloaded on a 1-0 pitch that was ultimately caught for the final out of the game.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game home series against Cal Poly Pomona.
