Golden Eagles Fall Short In Ninth-Inning Rally

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had one final rally come up just short on Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener against Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 8-3, but battled back to within one run three separate times, the final time in the ninth inning of an 11-10 loss to the Broncos in a wild game at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (23-19, 13-12 CCAA) got a one-out, two-run single from Ben Lee to close to within 11-10 in the ninth inning, but had a pair of fly outs to end it.

Kadyn Victorian had a spectacular day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs batted in for the Golden Eagles, while Lee was 3-for-6 with one run scored and two RBI. Kai Penuelas was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, while Cesar Chavez and Adam Axtell had two hits each.

Jack Sanders had a pair of home runs in the first three innings for Cal Poly Pomona (24-15, 16-9 CCAA), which also got a home run from Tyler Blade and a three-run double from Bryan Richman.

The two teams combined for 31 hits, including 10 extra base hits. There were also seven hit batters and seven walks, which meant plenty of traffic on the base paths. Each team also committed three errors and left 23 runners on base.

Alejandro Huezo started and pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Golden Eagles and allowed nine hits and seven earned runs. Jake Spence allowed five hits and one earned run over 2 2/3 innings and Luis Fernandez struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.

Andrew Campbell went five innings for Cal Poly Pomona to get the win. He allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while improving to 9-2 on the season. Geo Hernandez tossed two scoreless innings and Sean Suriyaniel got his third save after allowing a pair of runs in one inning of work.

Cal State LA led only once, 2-1, after a two-run single by Victorian in the second inning overcame a solo home run by Sanders in the first. The Broncos, though, regained the lead with a two-run home run by Sanders in the third.

The Golden Eagles tied it at 3-3 in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Chavez, but the Broncos took an 8-3 lead in the fifth, sparked by a bases-clearing double by Richman.

Cal State LA, though, scored four times in the bottom of the inning. Penuelas doubled in a run, Victorian delivered his second two-run single of the game and later scored on a run-scoring single by Chavez to pull to within 8-7.

Cal Poly Pomona made it 9-7 in the top of the sixth before Prado doubled in Lee to make it 9-8 in the eighth inning.

The Broncos got a leadoff home run in the ninth from Blade and a run-scoring single by Daniel Ruiz to open up an 11-8 lead before Cal State LA's final rally.

Penuelas led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and quickly took third on a double by Victorian. Lee's two-run single made it 11-10, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Broncos beginning at 1 p.m.
