LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team was able to salvage a split of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader with Cal Poly Pomona thanks to an early offensive explosion and another outstanding pitching effort from
Jonathan Manuel.
The Golden Eagles scored 10 times in the second inning to take an 11-0 lead and Manuel allowed only one run into the sixth inning of a 15-4 win over the Broncos at Reeder Field. It was an important win for Cal State LA (24-20, 14-13 CCAA), which dropped the opener, 9-3, to Cal Poly Pomona (25-16, 17-10 CCAA).
Manuel homered to lead off the second inning and added a run-scoring later in the inning to lead the way. He allowed five hits and two runs over six strong innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
Jacob Gudino closed out the game for the Golden Eagles in the seventh.
Omar Gonzalez got the offense started early in the nightcap with a home run in the first inning, his conference-leading 17th of the season.
Carson Panarisi went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in, while
Kai Butler,
Kai Penuelas and
Kadyn Victorian each drove in a pair of runs.
Dominic De Feo hit a two-run home run for the Broncos.
In the opener, the Broncos got a fifth-inning grand slam from Jack Sanders to jump out to a 7-1 lead. Cal State LA had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning sacrifice fly from Gonzalez, but the Broncos got a solo home run from Austin Duarte to tie it in the second and added two more in the fourth before Sanders' grand slam in the fifth, his third home run of the series.
Ismael Quintero struck out the side after the Sanders home run and tossed a scoreless sixth inning to finish his day. He allowed nine hits and seven runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Patrick Garcia allowed five hits and two runs over the final three innings.
Cesar Chavez went 4-for-5 with one run scored for the Golden Eagles, while
Alberto Prado,
Omar Gonzalez and
Ethan Gonzalez had two hits each.
