LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday with a big victory over Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and an outstanding
Brandon Gutierrez took it from there in an important 7-4 win over the Broncos at Reeder Field. After dropping the first two games of the series, Cal State LA (25-20, 15-13 CCAA) won the final two to earn a series split with Cal Poly Pomona (25-17, 17-11 CCAA). Cal State LA is percentage points behind Cal State San Marcos for third place in the conference.
Gutierrez pitched seven strong innings for the Golden Eagles and allowed only five hits and three runs. After the Broncos pulled to within 7-3 with three runs in the third, Gutierrez finished his outing with four scoreless innings to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Jared Robles allowed a solo home run to Evan Nahra in the eighth inning to make it 7-4, but finished the game without further incident to preserve the key victory.
Omar Gonzalez hit his conference-leading 18th home run of the season for the Golden Eagles to give Cal State LA a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Golden Eagles then broke the game open with six runs in the second.
Carson Panarisi reached on an infield error to make it 2-0 and
Kadyn Victorian delivered a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 3-0.
Ben Lee singled in a run to make it 4-0 and
Omar Gonzalez reached on an error to increase the lead to 5-0.
Alberto Prado finished the inning with a two-run double to make it 7-0.
Cal Poly Pomona struck for three runs in the third thanks to a two-run triple by Daniel Ruiz and a sacrifice fly by Julian Angulo, but Gutierrez kept the Broncos scoreless until departing after the seventh.
Cal Poly Pomona got its final run in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Nahra, but Robles locked it down after that.
