LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team got a late rally in the opener and a quick start in the nightcap in a successful California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles scored twice in the seventh inning and four times in the eighth to take the opener, 10-7, and then scored seven runs in the second inning in an 11-1 win over Stanislaus State in the nightcap. Cal State LA (14-10, 4-3 CCAA) banged out 29 hits in the doubleheader led by a spectacular performance from
Cesar Chavez on the day. Chavez went 8-for-8 with six runs scored and three RBI in the twinbill for the Golden Eagles.
Chavez was 5-for-5 in the opener and Cal State LA rallied from a late 10-7 deficit.
Ethan Gonzalez slugged a two-run home run in the seventh to make it 10-9 and pinch-hitter
Adam Axtell delivered a clutch two-run single to give the Golden Eagles the lead in the eighth.
Kadyn Victorian doubled in another run and scored on a double by Chavez to make it 13-10.
Cal State LA had led 7-5 after five innings, but Stanislaus State scored five times in the sixth to take a 10-7 lead that was erased by the Golden Eagles in the seventh and eighth innings.
The win was made possible by some outstanding relief from
Jared Robles, who blanked the Warriors (12-12, 3-4 CCAA) on two hits over the final 3 1/3 innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-1 on the season.Â
Chavez was 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead a 17-hit attack in the opener.
Ethan Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI, while
Alberto Prado,
Ben Lee and Victorian had two hits each.
Zach Lewis was 4-for-4 with three RBI for Stanislaus State, while Eric Perez was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles got an outstanding start from
Jonathan Manuel, who allowed only three hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings with one walk and a season-high 10 strikeouts.
Isaac Quintero got the final four outs to finish the win.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning. Manuel had a run-scoring double to tie the game at 1-1 and he had a run-scoring single later in the inning to make it 8-1. Chavez,
Carson Panarisi and Prado had back-to-back-back RBI doubles in the inning.
Chavez went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI, while Manuel, Panarisi, Prado and Victorian drove in two runs each.
Cal State LA will conclude the four-game series against Stanislaus State with a single game on Sunday at noon.
