LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team came up short Saturday in the finale of a four-game series against Northwest Nazarene.
The Golden Eagles were unable to fully capitalize on some prime scoring chances in the middle innings and Northwest Nazarene scored one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 9-3 decision at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (5-4) won one game in the four-game series against Northwest Nazarene (6-4), the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference and NCAA West Region champions.Â
Omar Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaiah Munoz and
Ben Lee had two hits each.
Kadyn Victorian had the RBI for Cal State LA.
Coleman Parry went 4-for-5 with three RBI for the Nighthawks, while Gavin Brubaker was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Brandon Gutierrez got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed four hits and two runs over 2 1/3 innings.
Jacob Badillo allowed four runs over the next 3 2/3 innings, although two of those were charged after he left game in the seventh.
Isaac Quintero allowed three runs over the next two innings and
Chris Lozano pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
AJ Hendrickson started for Northwest Nazarene and allowed five hits and three runs over 3 1/3 innings. Hayden Crews and Wade Duncan combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings, with Crews allowed three hits over 4 2/3 strong innings to pick up the win.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second when
Ethan Gonzalez reached on an error to drive in
Cesar Chavez, but Northwest Nazarene scored a pair of runs in the third to take the lead. A run-scoring single by
Omar Gonzalez drove in
Alberto Prado in the bottom of the inning tied it at 2-2.
After Northwest Nazarene took a 5-2 lead in the fourth, the Golden Eagles got singles from
Jonathan Manuel and
Carson Panarisi and
Ethan Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the bottom of the inning with no one out. After Victorian lined a shot to the right-field wall that was caught for a sacrifice fly, Crews entered the game and got an inning-ending double play on his first pitch.
Cal State LA got a leadoff double in the fifth inning from Lee, but couldn't score and Northwest Nazarene got one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to pull away for the win.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday in a non-conference game at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The two teams will also play a single game Saturday in Carson before completing the series with a doubleheader next Sunday at Reeder Field.
