CARSON -- Cal State LA's baseball team got some clutch hitting and pitching on Friday to win the opener of a four-game non-conference series against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles got a run-scoring single from
Alberto Prado in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie, a run-scoring single by
Carson Panarisi and a two-run single by
Kadyn Victorian to earn a 7-3 win over the Toros at Toro Field. Cal State LA (6-4) got outstanding pitching from
Alejandro Huezo and
Jake Spence to limit the Toros to a pair of home runs that accounted for all three of their runs, but nothing else.
Huezo went six innings gave up nine hits and three runs to improve to 3-0 on the season. He walked only two and struck out four. Spence was outstanding in relief, tossing three hitless innings of relief to pick up his first save.
Jordan Townley allowed four hits and two earned runs in five innings for the Toros. The Golden Eagles took advantage of a pair of errors to score three times in the fifth after being blanked over the first four innings by Townley. After Nigel Buckley tied the game with a two-run home run in the fifth, Cal State LA scored once in the seventh and three times in the eighth for the win.
Jonathan Manuel and Panarisi had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, while
Ethan Gonzalez scored a pair of runs and Victorian had a pair of RBI.
After Tristian Usher gave the Toros a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the fourth, the Golden Eagles struck back for three runs in the fifth. Victorian reached on a fielding error that allowed Panarisi to score to tie the score and
Isaiah Munoz reached on a second fielding error to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Ben Lee grounded into a double play to make it 3-1.
Buckley hit a two-run home run to tie it in the sixth, but Prado's infield single gave the Golden Eagles a run in the seventh and the lead for good. Panarisi singled in another run in the eighth and Victorian singled in two more runs later in the inning to account for the final score.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a single game at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday at Reeder Field.Â
