Golden Eagles Earn A Well-Played Doubleheader Sweep

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's baseball team was seeing double Friday after sweeping a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles got a run-scoring single from Michael Rosales in the ninth inning to win the opener, 4-3 and then got a complete-game shutout from Owen Hunt to take the seven-inning nightcap, 2-0, at Maloney Field. Cal State LA (20-29, 15-24) has won the first three games of the four-game series and clinched its first winning series of the season.

After the dramatic win in the opener, the Golden Eagles got another tremendous start from Hunt, who tossed the team's first shutout of the season. He allowed only four hits over the seven innings while walking one and striking out seven. He improved to 7-1 and lowered his earned run average to 2.57.

He also threw his third straight seven-inning complete game.

The Golden Eagles broke a 0-0 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Nick Atkins and Johnny Pacheco led off the inning with singles and Atkins scored when Wilem Drozdowski reached on an error. Will Picketts drove in the second run with a single to right.

Pacheco had a pair of hits, while Drozdowski, A.J. Salgado, Picketts, Gerardo Castaneda and Atkins also had hits.

The Golden Eagles got an outstanding start in the opener as well as Deandre Carter, making his second start of the season and first since Feb. 25, went a season-long 7 2/3 innings and gave up only two earned runs. He worked around 11 hits, didn't hit a batter and struck out two.

Dylan Needham got the last four outs of the game and picked up the win.

Castaneda went 4-for-5 and scored what turned out to be the game-winning run. Rosales had three hits, including the single that scored Castaneda to win it. Atkins also had three hits, while Pacheco went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Golden Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead when Pacheco tripled and scored on a groundout by Drozdowski.

Cal State LA took a 2-0 lead in the third on a run-scoring single by Picketts. After the Gators made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, the Golden Eagles made it 3-1 in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Rosales that scored Drozdowski.

The Gators tied it with two runs in the eighth, but the Golden Eagles regained the lead in the top of the ninth witha two-out rally. Castaneda doubled to keep the inning going and Rosales singled to center to drive in the run.

Needham got out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning, inducing a doubleplay grounder to end it.

Cal State LA will conclude its season with a single game on Saturday beginning at noon.
