LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team put it all together on Sunday to earn a split of its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles backed outstanding pitching from
Colby Davis,
Christian Casados and
Dylan Needham with a 13-hit attack and beat the Warriors, 15-2, Sunday at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (7-7, 2-2 CCAA) has now split each of its first four series this season, continuing that trend in its first conference games of the season.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open early by scoring eight runs in the second and six more in the third to make it 14-1 early.
Hayden Luff,
Michael Rosales and Anthony Angel Jr. each drove in three runs, while Luff also scored three runs and
Johnny Pacheco,
A.J. Salgado,
Nick Penzetta,
Noe Garcia and Angel Jr. scored two runs each.
That was plenty of support for Davis, Casados and Needham, who combined to limit the Warriors (4-5, 2-2 CCAA) to six hits and single runs in the second and fourth innings. Davis started and went the first four innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five in his best outing of the young season. Casados blanked the Warriors on just one hit over the next four innings to earn his second win of the season and Needham finished the game with one scoreless inning.
Danny Murphy drove in both runs for Stanislaus State.
The Golden Eagles batted around in the second inning to erase an early 1-0 deficit.
Will Picketts singled and Salgado walked to start the inning and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Rosales. Penzetta singled to drive in Picketts to tie the game at 1-1. Angel singled in a pair of runs to give the Golden Eagles the lead and
Wilem Drozdowski walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and make it 4-1. Luff added a two-run double to make it 6-1, Picketts had a run-scoring groundout to make it 7-1 and Luff scored on a wild pitch to finish the scoring.
Cal State LA added three more runs in the third. Penzetta singled and Garcia reached on an error to start things. Penzetta scored on a run-scoring single by Angel and Garcia came around to score on a throwing error to increase the margin to 10-1. Pacheco tripled in another run to make it 11-1 and he scored on a single by Luff. Rosales contributed a two-run double later in the inning to make it 14-1.
Cal State LA got its final run sacrifice fly by Rosales.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday in the opener of a four-game series at Cal State Marcos.
