SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State San Marcos get off to a tough start on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles managed only three hits and were blanked by the Cougars, 10-0, at the CSUSM Baseball Field. Cal State LA (7-8, 2-3 CCAA) kept the game scoreless into the fifth inning when Cal State San Marcos (5-6, 1-0 CCAA) broke through for four runs. The Cougars added four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth and three pitchers combined for the shutout.
Nick Atkins went 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles, while
Johnny Pacheco had the other hit. All three hits were singles.
A.J. Salgado had three walks in four plate appearances.
Luke Reece had three hits and drove in three to lead the Cougars. Cal State San Marcos had 10 hits in the game.
Garrett Apker tossed five shutout innings and allowed just two hits to get the win for the Cougars, while Nolan Long and Christian Lewis completed the final four innings for the shutout.
Yuji Sakane allowed only one hit over 4 2/3 innings for the Golden Eagles, but that hit was a two-run triple that started the scoring in the fifth. He walked two and struck out four.
Julien Garcia gave up six hits and three earned runs over 2 1/3 innings and
Jacob Rangel allowed two runs in his one inning of work.
Cal State LA and Cal State San Marcos will continue the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
