REDLANDS -- Cal State LA's baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a non-conference win on Friday at the University of Redlands.
The Golden Eagles struck for seven runs in the top of the first inning and beat the Bulldogs, 15-5, in a non-conference game at The Yard. Cal State LA (3-2) scored 11 runs over the first three innings to take command against Redlands (1-1).
Wilem Drozdowski had a big day at the plate, getting two singles, a double and a triple in his first four at bats and finishing the day 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI.
Johnny Pacheco also had a big day, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Pacheco and Drozdowski combined to go 7-for-8 with seven runs scored and five RBI from the top two spots in the order.
Will Picketts had a pair of hits and three RBI, while
Drew Emmons had a hit and drove in a pair of runs.
Brent Jacques got the start and worked four solid innings. He gave up five hits and four runs while walking two and striking out six.
Owen Hunt went the next four innings and didn't allow an earned run while allowing three hits. He walked two and struck out five.
Micah Hee finished up with one scoreless inning.
Max Smiley hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs for Redlands.
The Golden Eagles struck early, sending 12 batters to the plate in the seven-run first inning. Pacheco and Drozdowski singled and
Hayden Luff drew a walk to load the bases. Picketts walked to force in the first run of the game and Emmons followed with a one-out, two-run single to make it 3-0.
Michael Rosales was hit by a pitch and
Nick Atkins walked to force in another and make it 4-0.
Pacheco then cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it 7-0.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the second to make it 8-0.
A.J. Salgado doubled and scored on a single by
Gerardo Castaneda.
After Smyley homered in the bottom of the second to make it 8-1, the Golden Eagles added three more runs in the third. Drozdowski doubled in two runs and later scored on a double play grounder off the bat of Salgado.
Drozdowski tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Picketts in the fifth to make it 12-4 and the Golden Eagles scored three more times in the seventh to make it 15-4.Â
Pacheco was hit by a pitch, Drozdowski singled him to third and Pacheco scored on a passed ball. Picketts later doubled to drive in Drozdowski and a sacrifice fly by Salgado competed the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action with another game at Redlands on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
